Description
AI agents can now pay for APIs and data, but payment is one-way: the agent pays with no guarantee it gets what it paid for. No delivery checks, no automatic refunds, no recourse. That's what stops people from trusting agents with real money.
We built open-source auth-capture for x402 on the XRP Ledger:
- XRPL binding spec: Native escrow with a deadline, no smart contracts.
- npm package
x402-auth-capture-xrpl: Buyer, seller, and facilitator schemes for@x402/core. - Live non-custodial facilitator: Creates escrows, releases payments with the verifier's key, and automatically cancels expired escrows.
- Proven on testnet: Honest sellers get paid exactly; cheating sellers get nothing. The agent loses only a 12-drop network fee.
Misa is the first product built on this infrastructure. Its proprietary verification engine checks every API response against the seller's published promises before releasing payment.
Misa also helps API sellers open for business to AI agents. Sellers connect their existing APIs, and Misa makes them discoverable and payable by agents, helping sellers define machine-readable delivery requirements. If verification passes, the seller gets paid. If it fails, the agent's funds are returned after expiry. Every transaction produces a signed receipt.
In our demo: A seller goes live in minutes. An autonomous agent discovers and purchases company data. A broken response never gets paid; a successful retry releases XRP to the seller on testnet.
Technical Details
How it works: An agent receives an x402 payment request and locks XRP in XRPL Escrow. Misa verifies the seller's delivery against agreed requirements. If valid, Misa releases the key to pay the seller. Otherwise, funds return to the agent after expiry.
Why XRPL: Non-custodial, on-chain buyer protection. No smart contracts or intermediaries holding funds.
Open source: An XRPL binding spec for x402 auth-capture and x402-auth-capture-xrpl, featuring agent signing, seller/facilitator integrations, and automatic cancellation.
Testnet results: Three successful rounds with honest and malicious sellers. Honest sellers received exact payment; malicious sellers got nothing. Agent cost: just 12 drops in fees.
Agent demo: A Strands agent on Amazon Bedrock AgentCore autonomously discovers and purchases an API via AgentCore Gateway.
Agents can already pay. Misa ensures they get what they paid for.
